They aren’t organizing shovel brigades to protest endangered species road closures. They aren’t forming a “freedom cavalry” to cut the locks off of headgates. Thousands of paperworkers aren’t marching through the streets of Lewiston to protest endangered-salmon restrictions on dams. “I don’t hear a tea party conversation about federal land arrogance,” said John Freemuth, a Boise State University political science professor and senior fellow at the Andrus Center for Public Policy. “That tells you a lot.” So while Obama faces many of the same issues that Clinton faced, Western land anger isn’t one of them.
