SpIFF entry ‘Mother’ makes a return
One of the more intriguing films from the most recent Spokane International Film Festival is opening Friday at the Magic Lantern. “Mother” is a Korean film that plays out like a cross between “Forrest Gump” and “Psycho.”
Did I say intriguing? I meant weird.
Here are the major films opening on Friday:
“A Nightmare on Elm Street” : Music-video director Samuel Bayer starts the “Nightmare” series over again. This one stars Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy Krueger and a whole new generation of young actors for him to carve up.
“Furry Vengeance”
: Brendan Fraser stars as a developer whose latest project rouses the ire of the animals whom he plans to displace. Set in Oregon, the movie was shot in … Massachussetts? Can you say f-a-m-i-l-y c-o-m-e-d-y?
“City Island” : Andy Garcia stars as a corrections officer/actor wannabe who brings home a guest whose past helps open a whole closet of family secrets. Oh, yeah, this, too, is supposed to be a family comedy. Only without the cute animals.
“Mother” : Korean filmmaker Joon-ho Bong gives us this study of a mommy who will stop at nothing to protect her only son … even if he may not deserve the effort.
“The Yellow Handkerchief”
: A road-trip film, this Udayan Prasad film follows three unlikely travelers - played by Eddie Redmayne, Maria Bello and William Hurt - whose trek through rural Louisiana gives us a look into what makes them tick. Or whatever.
