New jail not needed

S-R editors claim that Al French “understands the need for a new jail.” But where did he get this understanding? Did he read the 212-page Corrections Master Plan? Did he attend any planning meetings on the jail over last couple years? Was he at the May 12 public hearing where most speakers rejected the nearly half-billion-dollar jail complex?

Commissioner Mager understands that taxpayers will never approve such a monstrous expense for another monument to failure. She also understands that better management, community involvement and programs for the jail are really what are needed. She was so right about the racetrack fiasco; Richard and Mielke were so wrong. And so why isn’t she respected and selected by the Review for her sensible jail solutions now?

Irritated by prolonged study and postponements, editors have betrayed their 2008 advice for commissioners to break the incarceration habit, fight their addiction to jail, and “unlock that mentality to free up smarter choices.” Will someone ask Al French to explain the need for an expanded jail when the sheriff has freed up bed space and laid off 67 jailers?
