Future will need link to past
I hope Gov. Gregoire will reconsider her plan to close Spokane’s Museum of Arts and Culture. It is Spokane’s only substantial museum. It holds Spokane’s long-term memory. It is one place people go willingly to stop and think – certainly a social good worth supporting.
It’s easier to cut things like the MAC because its benefits are not seen for a long time. Without institutions like the MAC, though, in the long term we become gradually less of a society and more a crowd of people bumping into each other as we pursue our own survival.
The present governor has a responsibility to consider how future governors are going to govern millions of people who do not understand what they have in common.
