Civic pride well nourished

As one who chose to retire in this area after living in places such as Minneapolis, Paris (France) and Los Angeles, I am always dismayed by disparaging remarks about Spokane.

First of all, you have columnist Doug Clark, a very funny guy. You also have quality health care, four delightful seasons, glorious scenery, historical and pleasing architecture in the downtown area, lovely parks, friendly people, good schools (including colleges), great entertainment, a good family environment, clean air, a Trader Joe’s coming next year, a possible medical school, and the list goes on.

Now, I am not naive enough to be unaware of faults. Negatives include a lack of “pride of ownership” in some neighborhoods. My grandmother always said there was no shame in being poor but no excuse for being dirty. And, of course, I’d love to see a really good Mexican restaurant with really good margaritas as well as some other choice eateries.

I prefer city centers to strip malls. And how about issuing the death penalty for graffiti artists?

All in all, however, Spokane is special. Take pride, Spokanites! Or is it Spokaneans?
