Right face; forward march

The Spokesman-Review

Regarding the Jan. 30 article about how Michael Steele, chairman of the Republican National Committee, has decided to no longer provide financial support to any moderate Republican candidates: In other words, the Republican Party is moving further to the right.

President Obama promised to be bipartisan and, to the dismay of the progressives, he is trying too hard.

In the same paper was a column by Froma Harrop titled, “Show some spine, call GOP bluff,” daring the Republicans to filibuster serious Democratic health care reform, with no backroom deals done with shakedown artists. Also, a letter to the editor from Marianne Torres, pledging to never vote for another Democrat until she sees a candidate who acts like one.

The base of the party is abandoning Obama as they feel he listens to the Republicans more than the ones who put him into office. Yet every time some Republican gets in front of a TV camera, they state that Obama made a hard left when he got into office and needs to move more to the center.

Why do the Democrats, led by our president, need to move to the center while the Republicans are moving further to the right?
