Immigration misunderstood
Greg J. Miranda (Letters, Feb. 14) needs to get some facts before he writes more letters about immigration.
People come across the border to work in order to help their families. The idea that they come to “steal from my family” is ludicrous.
Mr. Miranda also makes the mistake of believing that immigrants have only to “ring the doorbell” to be invited in. He should go to the U.S. Department of State’s Web site, www.state.gov, click visas, search Visa Bulletin for March 2010 and start reading. The information will dispel his misconception.
For many there is no chance of legal entrance, and for most others the waiting period is so long that when the date arrives immigration is no longer a practical solution.
The current system supplies only a small percentage of the farm workers that are employed at peak harvest in the United States. It is our insatiable need for cheap labor that fuels illegal immigration.
There are many valid concerns about immigration policy, but Mr. Miranda doesn’t seem to have a grasp of any.
