A Monday from WSU

COUGARS • UPDATED: Tuesday, 11 a.m.

An interesting Monday. Interesting enough to have a post that includes more than just the Arizona State win over Arizona. Read on.

• Washington State: So the athlete Quincy Pondexter decides to emulate is Joe Namath? Pondexter’s guarantee last night the Huskies were going to win Saturday in Pullman was Namath-like. And makes this week even more fun. … I can guarantee one thing: I’ve talked to Klay Thompson as often this year as any media member in the area – on and off the record - and never once has he ever said he was even thinking about entering the draft after this season. That’s why, throughout the season, I’ve downplayed any rumors, even writing on this blog Klay has made it clear he’s not leaving. And, I figured, when dad Mychal was emphatic about Klay not being ready in an interview with a Seattle radio station and then said the same to me at Cal, which I passed on, everyone got the picture. Guess not. When Klay reiterated to freelancer Howie Stalwick after last Saturday’s game he was not thinking about the NBA at all, it became an announcement . Wouldn’t it be an announcement if he said he was going? Especially after a game in which he was nearly shut out? Whatever. … The big news this week should be Bill Moos’ decision whether he will take the WSU athletic director job – and I would say it’s about 90 percent sure he will. I heard a number last week from one person about what Moos was offered, but I can’t confirm it to my satisfaction, so I won’t pass it on. But it is a lot of money if it turns out to be true. If I get it pinned down to my satisfaction, I’ll pass it along.

• Around the Pac-10: It looks like the conference regular season title (here are the standings ) may just come down to the two teams who have a NCAA at-large shot: Cal and Arizona State. The Sun Devils edged UA 73-69 at McKale Center, basically making the Wildcats’ NCAA streak dependent on the Pac-10 tourney – along with six other teams. … Of those, only Washington has a winning conference mark (remember, USC is not eligible) and the Huskies and the Cougars are the only ones with a winning overall record. Pretty interesting. Or sad, depending on your point of view.

UPDATE: This from the Pullman Police logs. Redshirt freshman defensive back Jamal Atofau was arrested for fourth-degree assault early Saturday morning. WSU coach Paul Wulff is gathering more information.

• That’s all for this morning. We’ll be back today if news warrants. Until then …
