Majority Leader Harry Reid said Monday that he “could have used a better choice of words” when he described Barack Obama in 2008 as “light-skinned” with “no Negro dialect” unless he wants one. The Nevada Democrat spent the weekend furiously calling up black political leaders, including Obama, to express regret for the comments, which were reported in the new book, “Game Change.” Republicans, including GOP National Committee Chairman Michael Steele, have called on Reid to step down as majority leader in the light of the remarks. Question: Republicans are claiming that Democrats defending Reid are being hypocritical in light of their stand against former Senate leader Trent Lott, who praised Sen. Strom Thurmond, a former segregationist, on his birthday in 2002. Is this a legitimate comparison?
