Local Schools Prepare For More Cuts

Item: Schools prepare for lost funds: Lakeland, Post Falls both stand to lose $400K, Cd’A $780K /Maureen Dolan, Coeur d’Alene Press

More Info: Public schools in Kootenai County stand to lose a combined $1.6 million in state funds under Gov. Butch Otter’s proposed $27 million midyear budget cut to public education. During his State of the State speech Monday, Otter said he wants schools to shoulder the full burden of the holdback using their own rainy day fund balances. Previously, districts have been buoyed by the state’s Public Education Stabilization Fund, but the reserves have dwindled to about $23 million.

Question: Should the state continue to tap its stabilization fund to avoid cuts in public school education?
