Press Damns Prez Bell w/Faint Praise

Dr. Bell pledged $3,000 on behalf of NIC toward the new chamber building, and in the aftermath of that announcement, critics have lined up to sling more bolts. How dare Dr. Bell hand over college money — derived from student tuition and taxpayers — to a private business consortium after cutting the popular Dr. Ketchum’s job to save money, they say. And this in light of news earlier in the evening from Gov. Otter that the state’s bleak budget picture was worsening by the hour, placing even more pressure on educational institutions and taxpayers alike. We believe Dr. Bell and the NIC Board of Trustees have made a grievous mistake by eliminating Dr. Ketchum’s job, but we think the president was justified in making the donation to the Post Falls chamber/ Mike Patrick , Coeur d’Alene Press Editorial Board.
