Community ties matter
Put an R or a D after a candidate’s name, and some folks will solemnly declare his virtues whether based in fact or not. For these voters, party is all that matters. The recent spate of letters arguing that Michael Baumgartner is a Spokane guy brings that trait to mind.
I attended high school in Billings and graduated from the University of Montana. My parents still live in Billings, but I’ve not lived or worked there since 1979.
Michael Baumgartner is no more connected to Spokane than I am to Billings. If I returned today to declare myself a candidate for state senator, I should not be surprised that independent and thoughtful voters would view me as something of an opportunist. Indeed, they might conclude that my credibility would be enhanced by a few years of seasoning in the region I want to represent.
Chris Marr has lived in Spokane for 25 years. He has raised a family here, run a successful small business and ably served in significant positions of voluntary civic leadership. His excellent legislative record shows Chris understands the challenges and opportunities of our region. This independent is voting for Chris Marr.
