Unemployed need a hand

Sometimes I am embarrassed to be a citizen of the United States, like when congressional Republicans decide not to renew employment insurance for people trying to find jobs in the worst economy since the Depression. And when Repubs like Sharron Angle, running for Congress in Nevada, calls her fellow Americans “lazy” and “spoiled.”

Let’s see. The economy is bad because … people aren’t buying stuff! And people aren’t buying stuff because … they don’t have any money! And they don’t have any money because … they don’t have jobs! And if people were getting unemployment money, they’d … pay it right back into the system to buy stuff! And then … increased stuff demand would create more jobs! This doesn’t seem like rocket science to me.

Also, why do people on the right think that anybody who’s been on unemployment for a while is automatically a loser? These are our American compatriots. Fellow citizens. Working people. I thought the Repubs favored folks like that. But not really – because every Republican principle boils down to one thing: “I got mine, and that’s what counts.”

Oh, and blocking Obama, regardless of the soul-crushing results for their fellow Americans. That’s important too!
