Résumé was overlooked
In his letter of July 10, John Charleston attempts to define the differences between Sen. Chris Marr and his challenger, Michael Baumgartner. He points out that Baumgartner possesses a B.A. in economics and a master’s degree from Harvard. He neglects to mention that Marr has a bachelor’s degree (summa cum laude) as well and a master’s in business administration.
He also touts the challenger’s well-paid government job in Iraq and his experience as a teacher at Harvard. He dismisses Sen. Marr as someone who has “sold cars.” In so doing, he implies that someone who “sells” things is not as worthy as Mr. Baumgartner.
Yes, Chris was a partner in a successful local automobile dealership chain that he helped build over 20 years. So, I guess that makes him just a “salesman.” Like most of us in the sales field, it is a title I claim proudly. Those who are successful, like Chris Marr, know that it requires honesty, customer service and a willingness to stand behind your promises.
The last thing a good salesperson does is to demean their competition or suggest what other people do to make an honest living somehow makes them inferior.
