Time to reverse salary drivers

I keep reading that government employees get paid more than private employees for doing the same jobs, and there appears to be some resentment about that. The implication is that public sector employees should take one for the team and accept lower compensation and benefits.

How about looking at things the other way round? Maybe public sector employees are not overpaid. Maybe, instead, private sector employees are underpaid. Maybe the corporations that minimize their payrolls and benefits should provide a greater share of productivity gains to their employees in the form of higher wages and benefits. Maybe they should take one for the team.

Who says that the private sector should set the standard for what public sector employees should earn? Where, when and with what authority was this decided?
