Live up to motto

The Spokesman-Review

I walked Riverfront Park yesterday and focused on the YMCA Building and the prime stretch of the Spokane River beyond.

Architecturally, this is, in my opinion, a structure of mediocre design. It obliterates the vista of some of the most spectacular portions of our river. One can experience in this stretch of water the excitement and beauty of waterfalls, rapids, ripples, rocks and reflecting pools. Looking south, this marvelous water show is unfortunately up against a backdrop of the unattractive north facade of the Y. There is an inconsistency and an incompatibility here!

Our river would greatly be enhanced if the YMCA building were removed and the site landscaped with trees and flowering shrubs. We would then honestly be living up to our motto, “Spokane, Near Nature, Near Perfect!”
