Smaller reforms first
Having just finished reading Gary Crooks’ Smart Bombs (Feb. 28), it appears he supports and sees as the only solution to providing health insurance to those without it is the public option: an option in which we spend trillions of dollars we don’t have and then throw our children and grandchildren under the bus to pay for our irresponsibility.
Before we completely destroy our future generations, shouldn’t insurance and tort reform be tried first? Selling insurance across state lines would increase competition and thus reduce the price and would make insurance affordable to more. Couple this with tort reform limiting ridiculous jury awards and we have a win-win situation.
It seems to me the only ones against this are the insurance companies and the trial lawyers, and both groups are spending millions of dollars bribing politicians to keep their gravy train running. And I bet this could be accomplished with a health bill containing less than 2,000 pages, too.
