Lawmakers set new low

The Spokesman-Review

I thought our politicians could stoop no lower, but Friday’s headline (“Income tax put forward,” March 5) proved me wrong. The Democrats want to hit us with the stick of a sales tax increase, then present the carrot of a chance to get rid of it and lower it further if we vote an income tax on the evil rich.

They want us to do their dirty work. Most people making $200,000 a year have a business. This cost will be passed on to customers and will make the business less competitive interstate. Thus, our economy will be depressed even more. Plus, we will pay more in Washington for goods and services we buy from those that make over $200,000 per year. Also, this income tax will spread to us all eventually. Wonderful!

If they want us to make this decision there should be three choices on the ballot:

1. Accept 0.3 percent sales tax increase.

2. Accept bribe of 0.8 percent sales tax reduction and state income tax.

3. State austerity program (10 percent cut in all state salaries, suspension of prevailing wage requirement and art money on state projects might be part of this).

I vote for 3.
