A Few words

I attempted to contact GU coach Mark Few late last week when Leon Rice was landing the Boise State job, but didn’t make connections until Monday afternoon.

Nothing earth shattering to report, but there are a couple items of interest below.

Few said Rice probably could have become involved in numerous job searches over the years if he’d chosen to, but he didn’t pursue openings very often.

“It’s a great thing for Leon ,” Few said. “It’s a tough thing for me and my family and his family. That’s the thing people don’t see. Our kids, our wives are best of friends. But I think it’ll be a good move for him.”

Few and assistants Ray Giacoletti and Tommy Lloyd have been inundated with inquiries from coaches who want to replace Rice on GU’s staff. In a bit of irony, former Boise State coach Greg Graham inquired about Rice’s old position.

“It’s unbelievable the interest,” Few said. “We’re going to get somebody with a lot of experience, somebody who brings everything, coaching, recruiting, scouting.”

Few expects to make that decision fairly soon. Read into it what you want, but that seems like another indication that Few is staying put. I asked Few if Oregon was a possibility, but he gave an answer he’s repeated through the years. He declines to comment publicly on job openings.

Few said he hasn’t met with his players to determine if everybody will be returning next season. He said those conversations can wait while the players focus on academics.
