Governor’s message muddled

The Spokesman-Review

See “Governor signs tax increases,” Spokesman-Review, April 24.

On the one hand, Gov. Gregoire said Washington residents could avoid many of the consumption taxes by changing their habits – drinking tap water instead of bottled water, for example, or giving up smoking. Then, she expresses her belief in the people of the state of Washington and said, “I’m asking them to stand up.” Huh?

As to an initiative for an income tax on people making more than $200,000 or couples making more than $400,000, she says, “I have been opposed to an income tax. This is a different kind of income tax.” Huh?

We are continually frustrated with our governor’s lack of decision-making ability and clear-cut communication. We need political leaders who can explain their position clearly on these and other critical financial issues and who will do so with the constituents of the entire state in mind.
