Guard Grant Gibbs has decided to leave Gonzaga’s program.

More below in a short article that will run in Thursday’s S-R.

Redshirt freshman guard Grant Gibbs is leaving the Gonzaga men’s basketball team and he’s expected to transfer to a school closer to his Midwest roots.

“Grant has decided to pursue other options and we wish him well in his future endeavors,” head coach Mark Few said in a Gonzaga release.

Gibbs averaged 2.2 points and 1.9 rebounds last season. He played in 24 games, averaging 9.3 minutes. His lone start was versus Davidson in the Battle in Seattle when senior Matt Bouldin (concussion) was unable to play. Gibbs had two points and a career-high eight rebounds in 29 minutes.

After a standout career at Linn-Mar High in Marion , Iowa , Gibbs had scholarship offers from Gonzaga , Iowa , Iowa State , Wisconsin , Northern Iowa and Indiana State . Some of those schools as well as Creighton could be transfer options for Gibbs, who was rated the 17 th best point guard and the 96 th best overall prospect in the Class of 2008. New Creighton coach Greg McDermott recruited Gibbs when he was the head coach at Iowa State .

Gibbs redshirted as a freshman at Gonzaga after having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder.

Gonzaga has two guards joining the program this fall and two guards have verbally committed in the 2011 class.
