‘Wasted life’ naive

In response to Natalie Ju’s “Wasted life matter of choice,” (May 8), I want to say that I disagree with her opinions on the legalization of marijuana. In her letter, she expresses her opinion that if a person has nothing better to do than sit around and get high, they should be able to.

She mentions that people should be able to spend their own time the way they want and that they have the right to do whatever they want to themselves, even if they choose to live with symptoms of marijuana use.

This is a very unrealistic and naive outlook on the issue. Although people have the right to make their own choices regarding their lives, if they choose to smoke marijuana, “having nothing better to do than sit around and get high,” it will not affect only them. It will be our tax dollars supporting them and their lifestyles and paying for the damages smoking marijuana will have on their health, as they will have no income or health care.

I think this is an important point to keep in mind.
