Dog purchase requires thought
Within the past year, Spokane shelters have accommodated more than 6,800 dogs whose owners were once liable for their needs.
An adorable companion is appealing at first glance, but impulsive buyers tend to be unaware of how much dedication dogs require. Their hasty decisions lead them to return the dogs shortly after they come to the realization that a dog requires effort and patience.
I find it incredibly selfish when people buy dogs and abandon them a week later. Some may argue my stance on the issue is biased. Dogs can be aggressive, diseased or untrained and can be a burden. Regardless, it is the buyer’s responsibility to be conscious of their dog’s needs before adoption.
As stated by the American Kennel Club, “Before deciding that a certain dog is right for you, you must make an honest assessment as to whether your home is right for any dog.”
When an owner gives up on a dog, it loses trust in the owner, making building a trusting relationship with a future owner challenging.
I have a simple request. Do your research when adopting a dog. Your decisions not only affect your life, but your dog’s life.
