Layoffs won’t be forgotten

The Spokesman-Review

Tonight’s top story on TV’s local news was the announcement of the layoffs of 57 people within the Spokane County Jail system. The excuse? Too few prisoners.

What is the truth? Where are the hard-nosed journalists asking the hard questions? Too few prisoners or too many?

In just a few short months we will begin hearing the rhetoric for the need of a new jail. We have already been hearing about the search for a jail building site and the costs associated with such an endeavor.

When Sheriff Knezovich and Captain McGrath begin telling us again about this great need, asking us to approve hundreds of millions of dollars, we need to remember the 57 people that have lost their jobs because of “too few prisoners” and remind our friends and co-workers about the lies and deceptions being thrust upon us, the taxpayers.

I, for one, am not falling for it.
