The Slice: Don’t be turkey during holidays
Here’s a bit of advice for unattached adults whose families live far away.
If your boss asks if you have plans for Thanksgiving, be careful. You might assume that, after you report that you have no commitments, he or she will invite you to a sumptuous holiday gathering.
But there’s a chance your boss is actually poised to say, “Good, we need someone to work that day.”
Just wondering: OK, there are still six weeks until the big day. But how soon should we begin identifying those actively rooting against a white Christmas? And when should we hound them from our midst?
Pie or cake: “Always PIE,” wrote Pam Pierson. “Fruit, cream, pecan, custard. Unless, of course, it’s carrot, cheese or chocolate CAKE.”
“There are so many different fruit pies to choose from, I have to give my preference to pie,” said Herb Postlewait.
“Pie,” said Jay Fintz. “The best part is when the bottom crust soaks up the sugar and becomes candy-like.”
“PIE!” wrote Sue Chapin. “It is the entire point of Thanksgiving and it must be homemade.”
Blake Ballard rewrote the three-word question to form his answer: “Pie AND Cake.”
You know you’re getting old if: “You remember having a burn barrel in your backyard where you could burn whatever you wanted,” wrote Bob Isitt.
Slice answers: “I have mixed feelings about the remake of ‘True Grit,’ ” wrote David Townsend. “I am intrigued about how the story might be handled and the different actors’ take on it. But at the same time the thought of going to see it feels like a definite act of disloyalty to the Duke.”
Lan Hellie wrote, “Hey, why not just wallpaper the ceiling of the Sistine freakin’ Chapel while we’re at it.”
There is another option. You could read the revered Charles Portis novel that is the basis for both the John Wayne and Coen brothers film versions.
Today’s Slice question: Do you want another round of children’s tips on preparing a Thanksgiving dinner?
If your answer is “Yes” and you are a grade-school teacher, you know what to do.
