Coeur d’Alene, state champ!

The Coeur d’Alene football team did little wrong, and the result was the Vikings’ first state championship since 1985. The Viks won 28-7 over Centennial at the Kibbie Dome.

Here is the story.

After Coeur d’Alene struck early - a 67-yard pass-and-catch between quarterback Chad Chalich and Deon Watson - the game settled into a defensive slugfest.

Then in the second quarter, Centennial’s Logan Little broke through unblocked on a punt attempt, blocking a CdA punt and recovering it at the Vikings’ 1-yard line. Moments later, Cetennial quarterback Trent Godsey scored to tie it at 7-7 with 7:18 to go before halftime.

CdA put together a solid drive that began with 3:57 before intermission. The seven-play, 52-yard series was capped by a Zach Keiser plunge from a yard out as the Viks went ahead 14-7 with 1:42 remaining.

The Viks had another golden opportunity when Jake Matheson returned a punt 30 yards to Centennial’s 32. But Keiser fumbled at the Pats’ 24, squelching the chance.

Keiser had 62 yards on 11 carries. Chalich completed 6 of 12 for 122 yards.

Centennial was led by running back Mike Kirby, who picked up 106 yards on 19 attempts.
