Let users pay for stud harm

In response to Chic Burge’s letter on safety of studded tires and “what is the worth of your children and loved ones?” (Sept. 29):

My wife and I have never run studded tires, as the damage done to the streets is, in our opinion, inexcusable when proper equipment, driving technique and reduced speed are the answers to safe winter driving.

For those that think that studs give you a (false) sense of extra safety, I think a studded tire use fee should be imposed – $250 to $500 a year and a sticker for your windshield for proof of payment would allow you to run studs. I would hope this money would be used for road repair but also remembering we are placing it in the hands of illustrious administrators. Shouldn’t be any problem with this idea. You said it. How much are your loved ones’ safety worth?
