Jobs tied to referendum
I was incredibly disappointed in your shortsighted editorial opposing Referendum 52. I’ve experienced firsthand the impacts of this recession on the construction industry, which is why I’ll be voting to approve Referendum 52. Estimates say R-52 will bring 30,000 jobs to Washington by distributing money to school districts for building repairs, improvements and replacements. Many of the projects are ready to begin as soon as funding comes through, which means immediate job creation in this hard-hit sector.
R-52 doesn’t only create jobs. It also prioritizes health, safety and long-term cost reduction. It is exactly the kind of smart, forward-thinking measure we need. R-52 removes dangerous toxins such as lead, mold and asbestos from schools, and increases building energy efficiency. Making these improvements now will reduce maintenance and energy costs in the long run, saving taxpayers, districts and the state money.
Whether you care about education, health, the economy or jobs, you can find a reason to support this crucial measure. Please join me in approving R-52 on Nov. 2.
