Games kick off tonight, though WSU has a wait ahead

COUGARS

This morning turned out to have less WSU news than we expected, being it is a couple days before the opener and all. But that doesn’t deter us, no way. We have enough to keep you busy until lunchtime if need be – and you read really, really slowly.

• Washington State: Though the Cougars don’t start until Saturday, the college football season starts tonight. As does the conference’s, with USC playing in Hawaii. As always, I have my Pac-10 picks , the most inexpensive, guaranteed-to-give-you-a-laugh feature each week on the web. Better that Funny or Die. So there’s that. We also posted last night some notes and the rough draft of a feature on the two opposing quarterbacks, a story that finally appeared on our site this morning. … Freelancer Howie Stalwick talked with Bill Moos yesterday about schedules and such.

• Around the Pac-10: ESPN.com’s Ted Miller post his picks and give you 10 things to watch this week. … Some thoughts on the changing face of college football from San Jose’s Jon Wilner. … Washington: Husky running back Chris Polk decided not to talk to the media, but this story is interesting nonetheless. … Even a broken leg can’t stop this offensive lineman . … Oregon State: Ryan Katz makes his starting quarterback debut this week, at the college level anyway. … The season ahead for the Beavers. … Oregon: A couple different looks at the season ahead for the Ducks . … Cal and Stanford: Kinda light today. … USC: Lane Kiffin has made a USC debut against Hawaii before . … Fullback Stanley Havili is a Trojan legacy now. … UCLA: The Bruins have not had a healthy preseason. Now their all-conference kicker may be hurt. … Arizona State: Hat’s off to a Sun Devil defensive back . … Arizona: The basic college football defense is rarely basic anymore.

• That’s all for this morning. We’ll be back after practice this evening with our notes and our story for tomorrow’s S-R. Until then …
