Study war no more

In response to Henry Phillips, who has reached the ripe old age of 86 without apparently learning that violence against our fellow human beings rarely accomplishes anything positive, (Letters, Aug. 24), I consider David Brookbank a good friend and a gentle and ethical man.

Perhaps Mr. Phillips does not know that David has already been “thrashed” on the streets of Spokane by a pair of cretins who did not like him exercising his free speech rights to speak out against the current wars the U.S. is involved in. I do admire David for continuing to speak out in spite of that experience.

The fact that innocent civilians were murdered on Sept. 11, 2001, should not in any way justify the U.S. military killing innocent civilians in Afghanistan. Mr. Phillips should consider that our freedoms are far more protected by the ACLU than any wars fought in distant lands.
