Once upon a time, the Western was king
They don’t make Westerns anymore, which isn’t completely a bad thing. Like any popular movie genre, the Western was responsible for a lot of cinematic crap. Not to mention for creating a myth about the founding of this country that ignored or belittled anyone who wasn’t white and, mostly, male.
Even so, many of those of us who grew up watching Westerns continue to hold a special place in our hearts for the Western film. Any list of my top favorite films would, by definition, have to include such greats as “Shane,” “The Magnificent Seven,” “High Noon” and “Unforgiven.” Maybe even a film or two by Sergio Leone.
Which is why clicking on this link , which was sent to me by my friend Kathleen Magone, was so enjoyable. It brought back all those older films and TV shows, the good, the bad and the supremely ugly.
Sorry, Sergio. Couldn’t resist.
