Pedestrians, beware

I walk across Buckeye at Atlantic with my wife and my dog several times a week. I cross at a marked crosswalk. It is not a bus stop.

Most cars do not stop, and just this morning a Spokane police cruiser went on past without stopping. This is the second time this has happened recently.

I recognized the first officer, who did turn around and apologize, saying that he thought we were waiting for a bus. Some time ago, a Spokane County sheriff’s deputy became very agitated when I started to step off the curb and he had to come to an abrupt stop. These officers were not running lights or sirens.

This may seem a minor incident, but several pedestrians have been injured or killed by drivers not stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks. If they cannot enforce this simple law, and they themselves ignore or violate it, something is very wrong with our law enforcement.
