Response to Doug Clark

Regarding Doug Clark’s satire, “I can envision Spokane. …”

He talks about the group of smug busybodies who try to stop any development and calls them the Dimvisionists. How true. Like most young people, I had to leave Spokane years ago to find work and a livelier atmosphere.

When I moved back in the early 1980s, a Dallas developer wanted to build an amusement park in Riverfront Park, including a 300-foot-tall observation tower. They killed it. Then there were plans to put “Disney” type attractions in, with a “people mover” along the Howard corridor. That plan died, too.

Then in 1999, we voted to buy the land on the north bank, and use it for revenue-generating attractions. Twelve years later, that land sits empty. There were silly plans to put a parking garage there and the science center, and even more silly plans to move the IMAX and Carrousel there. They are fine right where they are.

In the meantime, nothing to generate revenue is on the north bank – revenue will be needed very soon to save the U.S. Pavilion or it will need to be torn down.
