Other jobs more dangerous
Police work isn’t listed as one of the top 10 most dangerous jobs. Yet, regularly we’re lectured about how dangerous it is for cops. This seems inherently disrespectful to loggers, pilots, fishermen, iron/steel workers, garbage collectors, farmers/ranchers, roofers, electrical power installers/repairers, sales, delivery and other truck drivers and taxi drivers/chauffeurs – all of whom do more dangerous work than police. Check www.money.howstuff works.com/10-most-dangerous-jobs- in-america.htm.
I’ve never read a letter to the editor praising loggers, farmers or truck drivers for risks they take on the job. When I worked as a building framer and roofer, adrenaline rushes from near missteps were common. I’ve witnessed bad injuries on construction sites and worked with a man who survived a seven-story fall.
Police officers know very well how dangerous it is for them at times but will also have to admit that most of the time it’s not. It’s boring unless they’re actively involved in something besides patrolling neighborhoods. The good cops should show us who they are by getting out of their cars and walking the beat. Meet the people and learn how crime prevention is done daily by ordinary citizens.
