Another Akey aide no longer at Idaho

UPDATED: 6:25 p.m.

Luther Carr, who served as Idaho wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator the last five seasons under Robb Akey, is no longer with the program. UI confirmed that Carr’s departure on Monday evening, after Vandals defensive back A.J. Annelus referenced it earlier in the day on his Twitter account.

It’s not yet clear if Carr left the Vandals or was dismissed. It seems, however, the move is part of series of changes by Akey after the team failed to meet expectations this year. Last week, offensive coordinator Steve Axman announced his retirement and a source told The Spokesman-Review that multiple players with eligibility remaining will not return next season.

Update : Akey has released the following statement through the UI media relations department:

“I can confirm Luther Carr no longer is a member of the Vandal football staff. I appreciate everything Luther has done for the past five seasons and wish him the best in his future endeavors.

“A search is under way for his replacement.”

Offense was by far the biggest weakness this past season for the Vandals. They eked out two wins and generated just over 20 points per game, which ranked 107th out of 120 FBS teams.

Carr, a former Eastern Washington University receiver and Lewis & Clark High coach, helped Idaho’s receiving unit prosper in 2009 and parts of 2010. But this season, the Vandals were plagued by injuries to key wideouts Preston Davis, Armauni Johnson and Justin Veltung.
