Snowy shoe prints lead to theft suspect

Shoe prints left in freshly fallen snow led Spokane police to a suspect in a burglary at a salon Tuesday night.

Jermaine M. Garland, 29, was booked into jail for second-degree burglary after police responding to an alarm at Salon Centric, 124 E. Short Ave., just before 11 p.m.

Officers Buchmann and Wilkinson followed footprints to the area of East 2nd Avenue and South Sherman Street, where they found Garland and located property stolen from the salon in his backpack, as well as marijuana.

The area has been hit a rash of commercial burglaries recently, including a burglary at the Wishing Star Foundation .

Garland is to appear in court today. He was sentenced in November to 13 days in jail after pleading guilty to third-degree retail theft with extenuating circumstances. He also pleaded guilty in July to two counts of misdemeanor theft.
