Go ahead, print filth

In the Dec. 14 Spokesman-Review, columnist Shawn Vestal writes in glowing terms of the Lake City’s Playhouse production of the musical “Rent.” He writes, “I’m wholeheartedly behind this production of ‘Rent.’ ” He calls it “good art,” and, among other insults, refers to those who oppose it on moral grounds as small-minded bigots, inane, mean-spirited and stupid.

In like fashion, in the Dec. 17 edition, Tracy Poindexter-Canton reviews the much-advertised “Young Frankenstein” touring production. She informs us that it uses, “filthy language, dirty jokes and pure, unadulterated inappropriateness.” She also informs us that it, “emits a never-ending supply of sexual innuendo,” and closes her review by writing that it “shines with comedic fun.”

Well, now. Since, according to this family newspaper’s fine writers, these productions are simply glorious works of art, I have a suggestion, no, a challenge! Rather than merely referring to “filthy language, dirty jokes, and pure unadulterated inappropriateness,” etc., in these highly recommended works of great art, just come right out and print some of the “filthy language and dirty jokes.” Surely, you should be eager to learn if most of your readers agree with your notions as to what constitutes praiseworthy art.

A lot of us will be watching for your response.
