The Slice: Maybe it’s time to look between the ears

A South Hill friend shared something that made me smile.

Though his name has been in The Slice on a number of occasions, I’m going to keep his identity to myself this time around.

“A certain grandmother we know recently started wearing hearing aids,” he wrote. “She’s been through the trial period of getting the right fit and now the world is loud and clear.”

So far, so good.

“The other evening, as she was about to go down a set of creaky stairs to the basement where her grandson was sleeping, she turned down her hearing aids so she wouldn’t make too much noise.”

JUST WONDERING: I realize it has been a long time since the movie came out. But if you consider how The Ridpath and Ferguson’s fared this year, it’s tempting to wonder if there is a delayed “Vision Quest” curse.

SPEAKING OF THAT FILMED-IN-SPOKANE 1985 MOVIE: Which of the following lines are you most apt to use yourself in 2012?

A) “I’m gonna drop down to 168 and wrestle Shute.” B) “I showed it to my mother.” C) “Hey, kid. Money ain’t everything.” D) “I’d do it all again.” E) Other.

SLICE ANSWER: Carrie Webbenhurst was at church on Christmas Eve when she overheard someone who might have been a first-timer.

Instead of inquiring about service leaflets, he asked if there were any more programs.

SAFETY TIP FOR SATURDAY: Remember, Ralphie’s mother (“A Christmas Story”) could have been talking about champagne bottles when she issued her famous warning about air rifles.

TODAY’S SLICE QUESTION (FINISH THIS SENTENCE): When I realize that my family has high-tech gadgets with more computing power than they had on Apollo 11 back in 1969, I find myself thinking …

A) That I’m glad Neil Armstrong wasn’t texting or emailing pictures of his butt while he was landing on the moon. B) That the first inventors of computers didn’t grow up with computers. C) That having access to a phenomenal amount of memory doesn’t make you memorable. D) There’s no app for courage. E) Other.
