First to testify: ‘A nightmare for IT administrators’

Pamela Chiarella, a teacher and mom from Mountain Home, is the first to testify at Tuesday's school reform hearing; she spoke against the Luna reform plan. (Betsy Russell)

The first person to testify at the school reform hearing, Pamela Chiarella, is a teacher and parent from Mountain Home. “Let me first say that schools are not a for-profit venture and students are not customers,” she said. “Teaching kids is the business of educators, and the Legislature needs to follow the advice and counsel of educators, not politicians, when it comes to educating our children.” She’s speaking strongly against the Luna reform plan, and particularly against shifting to more online courses. So far, the vast majority of those signed up to speak are against the plan. Chiarella called Luna’s laptop plan “a nightmare for IT administrators.”
