WSU faces tough task tonight

Of all the tasks awaiting a visiting Pac-10 basketball team, none may be greater than trying to win in McKale on a Thursday night. Unless it’s trying to win at Hec Ed on a Sunday. But the former is what faces Washington State today so that’s what we’re concerned with in this post. Read on.

• Washington State: The Cougars’ weekend trip to Arizona gets started tonight in Tucson against Derrick Williams and the Wildcats. UA sits atop the Pac-10 standings and already owns a win over Washington State. Here’s our quick look at the weekend. … We briefly examined the recent play of DeAngelo Casto in today’s S-R. Casto practiced both Tuesday and Wednesday after sitting out Monday to let his tweaked ankle heal, so he should be good to go tonight. … The Cougars signed one more football player yesterday, a JC defensive end.

• Around the Pac-10: It’s a big weekend in these parts for the Huskies, who play at ASU tonight then travel down I-10 to face UA on Saturday. UW’s depth has improved as the season has worn on. ASU hasn’t had many bright spots this season, but Ty Abbott’s defense is one. … The second basketball Civil War game is this weekend, with the Beavers and Devon Collier trying to steal one on Oregon’s home court. … UCLA and USC head north to the Bay Area, where Cal turned to Jeff Powers to fill in for freshman-phenom Allen Crabbe last week and Stanford is still holding tournament hopes. Really? … The Bruins have a defensive goal in mind while USC is still trying to figure out its lineup . … A couple of NCAA tournament-related items. … New president Mark Emmert downsized an Oregon grad who helped the event grow over the past couple decades. … The Pac-10 may not have a lot of participants in this year’s event.
