Monday morning WSU musings

COUGARS

So there is one thing you can count on in life right now. Monday mornings will be nearly devoid of Pac-10 basketball news. Like today. Oh, there is the story from last night’s upset in Berkeley – a game I sat and watched in its entirety but, like the car wrecks at Daytona, I skipped the game that followed on FSN – but not much else. What there is, however, we have, so read on.

• Washington State: It’s a long week then a short week. By that, I mean there is no game this Thursday – Washington plays tomorrow night against Seattle U. in its last non-conference game of the season – so everything this week will probably be pushed back in Pullman. Plus, there are no classes today, so basketball practice, which is mainly just video, free-throw shooting (lots of free-throw shooting, and the Cougars do plenty of it during the week as well, including competitive drills), stretching and weights most weeks, is early today. Coach Ken Bone will be on the Pac-10 media call tomorrow but his local media event will probably be later in the week. … And, with a Sunday night game in Seattle, the key Thursday home game against USC next week will be on the Cougars pretty fast. … CougCenter’s Jeff Nusser wants to know how you feel about Bone’s decision to bench Klay Thompson on Saturday. … Now on to the rest of the conference.

• Around the Pac-10: With California upsetting UCLA 76-72 in overtime last night, the Arizona Wildcats, two games up in the conference standings with four to play, seemed to be poised to win another title. Geez. But there’s a lot to play for, including seeding in the Pac-10 tourney. As I read it, WSU currently is the seventh seed – losing the tiebreaker to Cal – though it really doesn’t matter. All that matters is what the standings are two weeks from now. … Jorge Gutierrez just lit up the Bruins last night. They couldn’t keep him out of the key. … So where does Derrick Williams rank among Arizona’s great players? The list is pretty long. … One last look at Arizona State’s historic win Saturday. Oh, shoot. This link should have been in the paragraph above. Too late.

• That’s all for this morning . Don’t know exactly when we’ll be back. Until later …
