Unions deserve respect
Since the recession, many have lost their jobs. Some have been rehired with less than original pay and benefits.
Fortunately for me, I don’t have to worry about a job. I am retired with a good pension and benefits. The hard work by the elected officers of the National Association of Letter Carriers made this possible. I am proud to be a member of this union.
Local unions have been in the news recently about concessions they have made. Stories about labor unions are often one-sided. Much of the following information comes from a letter by the editor of our national publication, Philip Dine. He mentions that a contract problem is called a “labor dispute” when it’s a “labor-management dispute.” He says union officers are called “labor bosses” when they are elected, while real bosses are labeled “executives.” Unions are said to be “demanding something” while the company “offers” this or that. Corporate profits so often are put ahead of justice. I am reminded of the saying “The companies get the gold mine and employees get the shaft.”
It’s about time unions are recognized for what they have done for years: negotiate for living wages, benefits and working conditions.
