Columbia sockeye forecast upgraded, summer chinook lower

Sockeye salmon ride home in a fisherman’s cooler from the Brewster Pool, the stretch of the Columbia River near Brewster, Wash., on July 22. Sockeye are generally smaller than other varieties but still popular for their flavor.

SALMON FISHING — Good news and less good news for salmon anglers comes from today’s meeting of the Columbia River fisheries Technical Advisory Committee.

The group of scientists updated expected run sizes as follows.

  • Summer chinook = 80,000 at the Columbia River mouth.  Pre-season forecast:  91,900.
  • Sockeye – 181,500 at the river mouth.  Pre-season forecast: 161,900.
