Everyone be safe

In response to Bonnie Walker’s letter of July 9 (“Responsible bicycling”), which suggests that bicyclists be banned from roads without shoulders: She is correct in stating that this is a safety issue. But, that includes safe driving, too.

If you come upon a slow car or farm machinery on a rural road, I suppose that you slow down until it is safe to pass. It is no different if you come up to a cyclist on a curve or undulating road. You wait and pass safely.

Bike lanes do not always protect cyclists from unsafe drivers. Just today, a driver on Upriver Drive drifted into the bike lane behind me. Also, bike lanes and shoulders are sometimes unsafe because of debris.

We all need to be safe and courteous cyclists and drivers.
