Charge for tire studs
In answer to Michelle Galey’s letter blaming all the highway work on previous work with bad materials, she doesn’t mention all the damage done by studded tires. The Sunset Hill and Latah Creek bridge work on I-90 is all due to studded tire damage.
One woman was killed when she lost control in the bridge’s deep studded tire grooves. I had to dig a stud out of my heavy duty plastic front bumper that I got along the fast lane of I-90 through town.
People who have studs on their vehicles should be required to use only the outside lane and keep their speed under 40 mph. Most studded tire vehicles in the Spokane area are small, so the ruts are dangerous for larger vehicles.
In the Seattle area most studded tire users have medium or large vehicles that chew up the cement, so that lots of cement pieces come flying back, plus studs. While walking around Spokane in the wintertime, we see a lot of studs in the gutters from studded vehicles taking off too fast from the stoplights.
We need help repairing all the stud damage. Charge studded tire users $40 per tire per year.
