Campaign appeal appalls

I am appalled by mayoral candidate David Condon’s unbelievable $400,000 campaign budget goal (“Spin Control,” May 24 blogroll printed May 30). He is quoted saying at his breakfast fundraiser, “… some of you (in the room) – the recession hasn’t hurt you so much. You can give $1,600.”

For those of us who are either living on a fixed retirement income or working for a paycheck that doesn’t have “loose change” of $1,600 included, this recession does hurt. It makes us juggle the cost of gas against a weekend family outing and the cost of groceries against the special pleasure of dining in a restaurant.

Spending $400,000 to get votes to me seems like trying to buy them instead of running a campaign on the merits and ideas of the candidate. I am a county resident so I can’t vote for Mayor Mary Verner. I am an informed citizen who does know the qualities and the character of this mayor as well as the results of three-plus years of her leadership. Check out her results by viewing www.spokanecity.org. Then you’ll know why city voters cannot be bought – they know that good government is in action right here in Spokane.
