Libertarians’ libertarian
It is unfortunate that a recent letter to the editor (Feb. 20) claimed that Ron Paul is not a libertarian and that libertarianism is only a philosophy and not a political party. Both claims are false.
Ron Paul was the Libertarian Party’s candidate for president in 1988 and he is a lifetime member. Though he was elected and serves as a Republican congressman from Texas, he has not abandoned his principles.
It is true that the Constitution did not create political parties or determine that there should be only two parties. In fact, there are many. The Libertarian Party still happens to be the largest third party today.
It may bring discomfort to some folks on the right side of the political spectrum, but it cannot be denied that Dr. Paul – by and large – embraces libertarianism and its dedication to personal freedom and responsibility and economic freedom. People should be free to live their lives as they choose so long as they do not cause harm to others. Simple.
Many Libertarians (both “L” Party and philosophical “l” libertarians) have supported Ron Paul and continue to do so because he reflects the kind of legislator we should have in Congress.
