Slim chance of cover spot

Modern era presidential wives have taken on some very important social issues. Though not elected officials, their influence can add credibility to, and support for, causes like ending illiteracy, understanding mental health problems and “just saying no to drugs.” All of them should be applauded.

Why, then, has Michelle Obama been so criticized for her sponsorship of programs to eliminate childhood obesity? It is indeed a problem. She suggests moderation, not deprivation, and exercise. Hardly radical views.

Recently, Rush Limbaugh stated on his radio show, “It doesn’t look like Michelle Obama follows her own dietary advice. She does not project the image of women that you might see on the cover of Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition.”

Mrs. Obama is a statuesque, toned, 47-year-old woman and mother of two. Comparing her to a 22-year-old swimsuit model is ridiculous and sexist.

Never before have I seen any pundit, conservative or liberal, criticize a first lady’s cause or her appearance.

Mr. Limbaugh, I’m pretty sure you’ll never make the cover of SI!
