Bulldogs to play for third

Colfax will try and right the ship today as the Bulldogs face off against Bear Creek in the third-place game of the State 2B boys tournament. The Bulldogs were edged by Northwest Christian 48-44 in their semifinal game and hope a new day will bring better results against the Grizzlies.

The Columbia girls will hope for the same in their third-place game against Sunnyside Christian in State 1B action. The Lions will try and erase the memory of a 19-point loss against ACH, looking to close their season on a high note against the Knights.

COLFAX VS. BEAR CREEK

For the second day in arow, the Bulldogs find themselves up against a squad with superior size in the paint. The Grizzlies feature a pair of big men in Erik Domas and Ryan Strandin that stand at least 6-feet, 5 inches and in the early going, those two have four of BCs six points.

Bear Creek 17, Colfax 11 through one quarter

The Grizzlies have answered twice when Colfax has hit threes to cut the lead to three, getting 3-pointers from Luke Blankenbeckler and Gabe Rongve.

The Bulldogs cut the lead to four, but Robinson’s 3-point attempt to slice it to one lips out and Bear Creek pushes the lead to eight on four straight points.

Bear Creek 28, Colfax 24 halftime

With a pair of dead-eye shooters like Brandon Gfeller and Robinson, you just expect Colfax will heat up at some point, but the Bulldogs have struggled all game shooting from beyond the arc. Bear Creek has led by as many as eight as a result, getting big contributions from Strandin and Blankenbeckler.

Gfeller hits a 3-point bucket at the 6:33 mark to give the Buldogs their first lead at 29-28.

Bear Creek 36, Colfax 34 through three quarters

Blankenbeckler hits another 3-point shot from his favorite spot on the floor, just to the left of the left elbow, and gives BC a five-point lead. Gfeller, who has heated up since the opening half, drains a three with six seconds left to answer for Colfax.

Lucas Peterson hits a contested 3-point jumper to push the BC lead back to five with 6:01 left.

Colfax is ice cold from the field in the last quarter, scoring just six points and missing a handful of 3-point shots. BC smelling blood, pushes the lead back to double figures with 49.9 seconds left, 51-40.

COLUMBIA VS. SUNNYSIDE CHRISTIAN

Sunnyside Christian 10, Columbia 8 through one quarter

Mackenzie Parrow leads all scorers with 12 points and the Lions, after trailing 8-2 early, have gone on a 14-8 run at the 5:55 mark of the second quarter.

Sunnyside Christian 18, Columbia 18 halftime

Parrow’s 12 points continues to lead all scorers and the Lions close the half with a pair of free throws from Lindsay Loe to pull even. Stormee VanBelle has scores eight points and Analisa Van Oostrum has six points to lead the Knights.

the Lions open the half on an 8-0 scoring run, but SSC fights back to cut the lead to four at 30-26.

Columbia 35, Sunnyside Christian 27 through three quarters

The Lions score 17 in the third quarter to take a five-point lead, getting a combined eight points from Elizabeth and Julie Ann Larrew in the frame.

Columbia 55, Sunnyside Christian 43 final

3rd place: Columbia

5th place: Sunnyside Christian

Both east side semifinalists from the 1B bracket will meet in the second round of third/fifth place games Almira/Coulee-Hartline fell to Sunnyside Christian and Colton was edged by Neah Bay, setting up a game between the District 7 champion and District 9 runner-up.

The last third-place game will be Lake Roosevelt against Darrington. The Raiders will try and bounce back from their heart-breaking 40-38 loss against Toutle Lake to earn third place in the State 2B girls’ tournament.

COLTON VS. ALMIRA/COULEE-HARTLINE

ACH 16, Colton 10 through one quarter

The Warriors have taken an early lead in this game, despite not hitting a 3-point shot in the opening frame. Dustin Patchen leads the Wildcats, but has been harried by the defensive pressure of the Warriors.

ACH 37, Colton 26 halftime

The Warriors close out the half with a 10-2 run to take the 11-point halftime lead. Thunder Wellhausen has eight for the Warriors, while Patchen leads Colton with 11 points.

The Wildcats cut the lead down to one at 38-37, but a quick to followed by a three-point play by Cody Jess pushes ACH’s advantage back to six with 1:30 left in the third.

ACH 43, Colton 37 through three quarters

The Wildcats get the best of that quarter, but Josh Straughan’s 3-point attempt goes wide at the end of the quarter. With a make, the Wildcats would’ve puled within three.

ACH defensive wizard Robert Hurka fouls out with 1:03 remaining in the game and Straughan sinks both free throws to draw the Wildcats to within two at 55-53.

ACH gets a five-second call to give Colton the ball with 40 seconds left.

Patchen ties the game with 24 seconds remaining. ACH ball with 14.2 seconds coming out of the timeout.

Quiet for most of the game, Derek Isaak hits the biggest shot of the contest, giving ACH the lead with 2.1 seconds left on a pull-up jumper from the free throw line. Colton’s last-chance prayer sails off the back iron.

LAKE ROOSEVELT VS. DARRINGTON

Darrington 11, Lake Roosevelt 9 through one quarter

After a back and forth quarter, Darrington’s Jessica Brooks hits a shot at the buzzer to give the Loggers the lead through one stanza.

Darrington 30, Lake Roosevelt 24 halftime

Renee Cousins already has 10 points and Brooks has eight as the Loggers closed the first half on a 13-1 scorin run to take the halftime lead. Keya Fasthorse leads the Raiders with six points.

Lake Roosevelt 40, Darrington 35 through three quarters

The game of runs continues as a 12-2 LR run has the Raiders out front 40-35 with one quarter to play. The Raiders find themelves out front despite the fact that Dominique Pleasants only has three points in the game. In her place, Jada Desautel and Brianna Monaghan have a combined 21 points.
