The Slice: Happy spring from W.K.R.P.

Eventually the danger of slipping on icy pavement will be behind us for a few months.

But don’t go getting overconfident.

If you make a habit of walking on slippery hardwood floors with nothing but socks on your feet, you are one sharp turn or sudden stop from going down like a Les Nessman turkey.

Pep talk: So your New Year’s resolutions augered in long ago. Not to worry. You still have 300 days to get 2011 right.

Step 1: Call or write The Slice if you have no idea what a “Les Nessman turkey” might be.

Moving with pets: Jeffrey Neuberger’s family was leaving South Dakota and heading to Wyoming. They started out on a cold, blustery day.

“We departed town with my wife and kids in the lead car, and me and Cookie (a cat) in the U-Haul,” he wrote. “We had barely begun when Cookie began pacing back and forth on the back of the seat, then landed on my lap.

“I thought, hey, she’ll keep me warm and settle down. Instead, she used my lap as a litterbox. The result was warm for a moment, then cold, wet and noxious. It was not a good way to begin a 600-mile journey.”

LeRoy Nielsen’s Air Force family had to cut through a thicket of red tape to clear the way for transporting their dog and cat from California to their new home in Spain. Then, when the pets arrived in Madrid they were inexplicably placed in a massive warehouse.

Despite possessing the proper paperwork, the Nielsens were given next to no help in locating the two animals in the sprawling storage facility. “We started to wander around that building looking and at some point began to call ‘Kitty-Kitty.’ ”

The feline answered. And the family followed the urgent meowing to a happy ending.
